TONGUE SCRAPER
Tongue cleaning with the right tongue scraper
The tongue is the most important part of the mouth to clean. You need to be smart about how and with what you do it.
The only tool that will do the job correctly is a specific scraper called the Orabrush. Many websites out there will advise you do use an inverted spoon or conventional tongue scrapers.
It’s clear these people have no idea what chronic bad breath is and how to deal with it. The inverted spoon approach to tongue scraping is completely useless and conventional tongue scrapers will bring very limited relief. Let me explain why:
As you know, 90% of chronic bad breath is caused by a bacterial imbalance in the mouth. Out of that group, 75% will find that the imbalance is concentrated not simply on the tongue, but at the very back of the tongue and throat.
The inverted spoon or conventional tongue scrapers will not help those who suffer from halitosis because:
a/ It doesn’t clean the affected areas
b/ It only scrapes the surface
If your goal is limited to scraping away food debris, then conventional tongue scrapers available in any drug store will be fine. But if you suffer from chronic bad breath, you will need to do much more than that.
Bacteria do not live on the surface of the tongue
Ironically, those who advise to use an inverted spoon for tongue cleaning will also tell you that anaerobic bacteria live on the surface of the tongue. That is completely untrue. Bacteria responsible for chronic halitosis are oxygen intolerant, therefore cannot possibly live anywhere else on the tongue but deep inside taste buds and mucus to protect them from oxygen that would otherwise kill them.
That’s why only a specialized tongue cleaning tool will help dislodge them out of the crevices of the tongue. The Orabrush is very cheap and perfect for the job. I wouldn’t advise you to use any other if you want results.
Cleaning with the Orabrush
The Orabrush is ideal for cleaning deep inside the crevices of the tongue. Because it has very thin and soft plastic bristles as well as a scraper, you will brush while you scrape!
The bristles penetrate in between taste buds to dislodge not only bacteria, but also food residue absorbed within the crevices of the tongue. The result is impressive.
Scrape the back of the tongue
Cleaning at the back of the tongue requires time and practice. At first you will experience the gagging reflex, but it diminishes greatly in time. The gag reflex really is something you can dominate with patience and perseverance.
Within a week, you will find yourself cleaning deeper at the back of the tongue and in a mouth or so, you will be able to clean correctly ALL areas of the tongue.
What to expect after cleaning
I can tell you from experience that you are in for a surprise, especially if you’ve been living with this condition for some time. Your taste buds will come alive and you’ll realize that your sense of taste had been greatly diminished. Everything will become tastier.
Although you will see a great deal of improvement in your breath, unfortunately tongue scraping alone will not cure chronic halitosis. It is a necessary complement to treating bad breath, not the cure. Learning the technique and getting the gag reflex under control (give it time) is key to achieve total control over bad breath.
