BAD BREATH REMEDIES

With these bad breath remedies, take the advantage!

Our goal here is to fight halitosis efficiently. The only way to do that is to make life for bacteria responsible for bad breath as difficult as you can. You need to change your mouth’s environment into hostile grounds for anaerobic bacteria.

In doing so you’ll maintain their population limited and keep the release of volatile sulfur compound below detectable levels by the human nose. That’s the only possible cure for halitosis.

We’ve learned how to do just that in the ‘Treating Bad Breath’ page, but with these bad breath remedies you’ll find additional information that will enable you to perfect your cleaning methods and better your results. By taking some additional steps and making certain little changes in your life style, you take the advantage to achieve total control over your chronic bad breath condition.

Disinfect toothbrush and tongue scraper

bad breath remedies, natural cures for bad breath, natural remedy for bad breath You have no idea the number of bacteria that currently live on your cleaning tools. If you haven't been cleaning your toothbrush and tongue scraper, you're simply putting bacteria right back where you found them. They'll simply re-colonize your mouth.

Pour a little 3% hydrogen peroxide in a small glass (available in any drug store) and simply dip toothbrush and tongue scraper in it for the night.

They’ll look like they’re being deep fried! Don’t worry, hydrogen peroxide is an oxygenating agent and a powerful disinfectant.

The impressive bubbling action you’ll witness is the disinfection process taking place. Do this at least once a week!

Use Homemade Toothpaste

Brushing teeth twice a day with the homemade toothpaste shown on this site is extremely effective against germs and among the best bad breath remedies. As a matter of fact, The number of cases for destructive periodontal disease from people who usually brush with salt/baking soda/hydrogen peroxide mix is practically non existent.

Mouthwash properly

Everyone knows how to mouthwash, but do you do it properly or for long enough? The right mouthwash used correctly is in itself among the most preferred bad breath remedies and the very basis for which you will fight halitosis. Look at it as artillery in a battle field. Using mouthwash the right way can mean a world of difference when it comes to getting rid of bad breath.

It’s important to swish and gargle for the same amount of time. The back of the tongue and throat are very difficult to reach and are breeding grounds for anaerobic bacteria. If you don’t have gum disease or white tongue, I would suggest swishing less and gargling more!

Try it with tap water first. Simply tilt your head back as far as you can and allow water to penetrate the throat as deep as possible without swallowing. It’s important not to swallow because the mouthwashes I propose on this site cannot be swallowed anymore than you would swallow Listerine.

Gargle for 60 seconds at 15 seconds intervals. That’s how I do it, swish for 15 seconds and gargle for 15 seconds. Doing each twice allows me to mouthwash for 60 seconds without going out of breath.

Clean thoroughly at night

When it comes to bad breath remedies, this is one of the best advices I can give you. Take special attention and time cleaning your mouth at night. Bacterial reproduction reaches a peak while you sleep and saliva flow is at its minimum.

When you clean your mouth thoroughly before going to bed, you’re giving yourself a head start over bacteria. I call it the 'pre-emptive strike'.

If you do it with the products and using the techniques mentioned in the ‘Treating Bad Breath’ page, you can kiss morning bad breath goodbye!

Always clean tongue after a meal

bad breath remedies, tongue scraping, tongue scraper I recommend you brush and mouthwash after every meal, but lunch can be somewhat inconvenient sometimes.

Keep in mind that the reason you have bad breath is because bacteria tend to find a food source in your mouth and release odorous sulfur gases as a result.

It’s important to keep the bacteria’s food source to a minimum. If you can’t brush after lunch, you must at least scrape your tongue.

The tongue scraper needs no toothpaste, you can carry it easily, and it's discreet. If you’re eating out or with friends, simply go to the bathroom when you’re done and scrape away food debris from the surface of your tongue. After rinsing with water, chew Xylitol gum. By doing so, you combine a natural anti-bacterial agent with chewing and stimulating your salivary glands. A great combo!

Tea tree oil

An incredible natural remedy for bad breath. In our case, we use it to treat chronic halitosis thanks to its very powerful anti-bacterial properties. But tea tree essential oil is also anti-viral and anti-fungal, which means that with it, you can treat anything from bad breath to bronchitis or even athlete’s foot. Simply the best nature has to offer! It’s always very handy to keep a bottle nearby (see ‘treating bad breath’ page).

Grapefruit seed extract

When it comes to maintaining fresh breath throughout the day, this product is one of the best natural bad breath remedies. Grape seed extract is a powerful anti-oxidant and can be taken internally. The body uses vitamin C and E as anti-oxidant to fight off germs. Grape seed extract has been shown to be 20 times more effective than vitamin C and 50 times stronger then vitamin E. It’s also ideal in between meals breath freshener(see ‘treating bad breath’ page).

Xylitol gum and Lozenges

bad breath remedies, xylitol gum, natural remedies for bad breath For those who have a tendency to have dry mouth, it’s always good to have sugar free gum or lozenges in your pocket. Xerostomia will worsen chronic halitosis. Saliva needs to keep flowing constantly in your mouth without any interruption.

If you feel your mouth drying up, start stimulating your salivary glands with lozenges or gum with xylitol. By doing so, you combine the benefits of a great natural anti bacterial agent with gland stimulation.

Stay away from tobacco and coffee

Quit smoking and switch to tea! I won’t even go into how bad smoking is for you or that it’ll make your breath smell like sh..t. You already know that perfectly. But if you’re still hesitating on quitting, you need to know that aside from cancer, tobacco will also provoke periodontal disease that can itself lead to more severe conditions such as strokes, heart attacks, and diabetes.

Coffee increases the acidity level in your mouth drastically. If your goal is to control bacterial population in your mouth, drinking coffee will sabotage your efforts and make them less effective. Anaerobic bacteria love to live and reproduce in an acidic environment. My advice would be to switch to tea, preferably green tea.

Check your breath

What's the point of trying different bad breath remedies if you don't know if they work. You probably know the wrist licking method, well it doesn’t work. Not for me anyways. I personally prefer the tea spoon method. Take a tea spoon (preferably plastic) and invert it to scrape the back of your tongue. Let it dry for a couple of minutes and smell.

There are also electronic breath detectors available on the market. They measure the amount of volatile sulfur compound in your breath when you blow on it. They’re small and pretty handy in times when self assurance is needed...just don't turn bad breath checking into an obsession!
